PROVISION AND MAINTENANCE OF WATER SUPPLY FACILITIES IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KATSINA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

Educational development in boarding schools has come to a long way, as more money is continuously being spent on the educational enterprise with the hope of improvement in terms of schools facilities. Boarding secondary schools in Katsina State require adequate provision of facilities with optimal utilization and proper maintenance for effective school operation. This study assessed the “Provision and Maintenance of Water Supply Facilities in Public Secondary Schools in Katsina State, Nigeria”. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study was 35,554. This comprised 30 Principals, 1,423 Teachers and 34,101 Students from the public boarding secondary schools across the 12 Education Zones in Katsina State.  A total of 381 sample of respondents was used for the study. Proportionate sampling technique was used to select sample for the study. A self-designed questionnaire of twenty (20) items titled “Provision and Maintenance of Water Supply Facilities Questionnaire (PAMOWFQ) was used to collect data for the study and was validated by three experts. The instrument reliability index yielded 0.87 using Cronbach’s Alpha Method.  Mean was used to answer the research questions while One-Way-Analysis of Variance was used to test the formulated hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that water supply facilities such as boreholes and hand pumps were fairly provided in public boarding secondary schools in Katsina State. The study recommended that the Katsina State Government through Ministry of Education should ensure adequate provision of water supply facilities in public boarding secondary schools.
